Jean Huang (b. 1994) is a Canadian artist living and working in London, UK. Her practice is rooted in painting and spans poetry, photography, and performance. She holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art.

My practice is a form of embodied and participatory ecology: I explore the intrinsic relationships between living organisms, the weather, and the physical environment by inviting Nature to actively collaborate in my process. Each site-specific painting begins as an unstretched canvas carried on a hike, as a ritual of belonging to the land.

I map the landscape through frottage, archiving textures and stories from the soil, water, trees, and rocks – the land’s historians. I confront historical narratives such as ‘the landscape as sublime’ and ‘conquering nature’ by engaging with the land through empathy, care, and play. Found synthetic materials from the site are incorporated as a truthful response to anthropogenic impacts on the land. The canvas records both environmental conditions and my lived experience to form an ecosystem.

The landscape is also a portal to my internal geographies: familiar topographies transport me to past habitats and histories, the weather reveals my emotional terrain, and the seasons mirror the cyclical rhythms within. The landscape becomes a self portrait where I search for my sense of place.
