Jean Huang (b. 1994) is a Canadian artist living and working in London, UK. Her practice is rooted in painting and spans poetry, photography, and performance. She holds an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art.
My practice is an intimate collaboration with Nature. Each site-specific painting begins as an unstretched canvas carried on a hike, as a ritual of belonging to the land. I confront the historical narrative of conquering and gazing upon landscapes by inviting the local ecology to be an active participant. The process is rooted in empathy and care, with the land’s agency revealed through materiality. A reciprocal relationship is developed by balancing my marks with the imprints left by the environment.
Painting occurs through embodied engagement with the site: the landscape is mapped through frottage, body tracings, and muddy bootprints. Incorporating my whole body embraces that I am as much a part of the landscape as it is of me. The landscape becomes a self portrait, where I explore my inner geographies, seasons, and sense of place.
